David Carson - Raygun

He created nre boundries in mag publishing in the is 6 issue magazine. He igored the usual convential layout, with headlines, cloums and boxs. Using layout more freeley and not sticking to the usual grid. Creating more of an abstract and choatic look. The magazine was often unreadable, but visually more interesting. A more visual rather than litarar mag.
His unconvenial style of the magazine soon led onto other aspects of design such as album covers. His unusal style of layout could be inspiration for my work. I could not use the usual grid layout and work more freely with my designs.

Evaluation
i feel that i have learn't alot more on how to interprate what is being asked in the project. I think that some artists/designers, will influence my work and my decisions more than others. I was particulary interesting in the Carson and Brody work and feel that these two designers plus other designers who work in a similar way could influence me the most. I will continue to look at other artists and will refere back to the ones looked at here. I think now i have a good starting point for my project and have some ideas on were to start.

Futurist Typography

Similar to David Carson's work for RayGun. The layout is a rebel of the graphic grid. It bends to rules to create great imagery from text. This is similar to my booklet that i want to create. Open negative space with bold black text. The text is placed in such a way that it looks like ascii in a way. It's breaks the rules intrpduced by the grid.
The way the text lets alot of space, giving it a very free look is something that i would like to explore in my own work. I feel that the layout is more of a fine art direction rather than a graphic layout.
Posy Simmonds
I feel he creates brilliant characters with his unqiue style of drawing. As with Edward Tufte she creates an atmosphere, which makes you feel engaged in the image. I like the rushed but neat look to the drawing.
Edward Tufte
His illustrations are very mysterious and sinistar. His characters seem to be up to no good, and he keeps this throughout his images. I feel they are very imagintive and orginal. I feel his drawings have a sense of wit about them, inwhich the mood and atmosphere he creates. They have a surristist look about them.

Paul Davis - Us & Them

I like the unorthodox style of drawing and layout. It seems that he understands the grid and page layout, but creats a more 'random' and interesting range of page. I like the free hand type, the rough rushed look works nice with the style of drawing.
The composition of the line serves to connect the areas of emphasis in the image, giving the eye pathway from one main focal point to another. The page as a whole has not really got good balance, with more areas with negative space, i feel this creates more visual tension, relating to the 'title us and them' this 'tension' gets that across.
